More About Lisa's Chinese Kitchen

What, Why, and How

I’m Lisa.

My Chinese name is 王玲 (Wáng Líng).

My husband (a Yorkshire chap) and I moved to West Yorkshire from China in late 2018. Early 2019 we welcomed our son Arthur (骏逸 Jùnyì is his Chinese name) to the world.

Both of them LOVE my cooking!

Born in a beautiful city in the southwestern Chinese province of Sichuan called Leshan (famous for a massive Buddha carved out of the mountainside and for amazingly tasty cuisine), I have loved food, especially homecooked by my mum and grandpa, no matter where in the world I have resided (so far that’s four countries, four Chinese provinces, and counting!).

Having worked all over the world, been fortunate enough to have colleagues and friends from many vastly different countries, having sampled delicacies in scores of countries in which I have travelled, worked, and lived, my love and passion towards Chinese cooking has never dampened. If anything, it’s increased!

Wherever in the world I am, cooking and eating proper homemade Chinese food always creates a home away from home and brings back beautiful memories of my childhood.

Becoming a mum in another country has really made me think hard on how to ensure my little boy understands his heritage and Chinese Culture, and ponder deeply on how I might help him connect with China.

At the same time, friends I have made in the UK have slowly come to realise I’m secretly actually quite a good cook! Frequently they ask if I might be able to share with them some recipes, hints and tips for cooking.

Sometimes I cook that which my mother used to make, sometimes I recreate that which my grandfather created, occasionally I invent something new.

I have always cherished the possibility of creating something unique, everlasting, and meaningful.  With a little encouragement from friends and family I decided to create a way which could allow me to showcase Chinese culture and history, relive some childhood memories, and pass on a bit of heritage to my son through a taste of authentic Chinese homemade food: Lisa’s Chinese Kitchen (乐山食坊 Lèshān Shífăng)
